From the Bagasao Children:

Every week we learn about a different country or group of people needing prayer. We study their situation and then pray for them throughout the week.

Please join us in prayer for the Columbians.

The country and people:
Columbia is in South America. It is bigger than Texas and smaller than Alaska in area. The capitol city is Bogota’. The population is over 42 million. Their chief exports are oil, coal, coffee, emeralds, and bananas. The country is rich in gold, platinum and emeralds. Columbians speak Spanish and are generally very nice, cheerful people, believe it or not. Many of the Columbians are starving and live in dirty, crowded slums. Many of them are addicted to drugs or are in prison. There are some Christian organizations helping the children whose parents are in prison or on drugs. There are people in Columbia called guerrillas who will attack villages, kidnap people, and steal food. Guerrillas are warriors who are not part of a regular army. They are atheists (believe there is no God) and communists. They want to take over the government. Paramilitary forces are trying to keep power away from the guerillas. The Columbian army fights against both groups. People think that violence is a part of life in Columbia, and in many cases, this is true. Read the rest of this entry »

The Falashas are black Jews in Ethiopia. The Falashas had a hard life in Ethiopia. For a long time they could not eat because there was not enough rain for their crops, and nobody there had invented a Wal-Mart. After the Communists took over Ethiopia, they had even more trouble. Markets were only open on Saturdays, which was the Jewish Sabbath. Many people had to move from the country to Addis Ababa, the the capitol city. Read the rest of this entry »

Ethiopia is in eastern Africa. The people in Ethiopia are very, very poor. They have droughts and famines which cause starvation. There are a lot of annoying flies, and the people don’t have houses like ours, so they cannot keep the flies out. Very few children go to school. There was a civil war and many Ethiopians left the country. At the same time, refugees from Sudan and Somalia came to Ethiopia while trying to escape their own wars, but their lives did not get any better. Please join us in prayer for the Egyptians:

Egypt is in northeastern Africa. It has a population of 68,469,695 people.  The capitol is Cairo, the largest city in Africa and the Middle East.  It has a lot of people.  There are a lot of poor people in Cairo who live in the slums, some in an area called Garbage City.  It is full of garbage which the people collect to sort and sell to recycling places; that’s how they get a little bit of money.  Although there are a lot of poor people, there are also a lot of millionaires.  It is probably because their chief export is oil.  Desert covers 96% of Egypt.

Acts 2 in the Bible tells us that Egyptians were among those in Jerusalem who learned about Jesus from Simon Peter and the other apostles at Pentecost.  (Finally Peter’s loud mouth came in handy!)  Read the rest of this entry »
