Bagasao Children’s Prayer Club: Gond
From the children:
Every week we learn about a different culture or people group needing prayer. We study their situation and pray for them throughout the week.
Please join us in prayer for the Gond.
The people and culture:
The Gond is one of the largest tribes living in central India. The people live in houses made of bamboo, leaves, and timber. Many of them are farmers. Illiteracy is a huge problem. Some Gond, especially the older tribe members who do not know how to read or write, are cheated by others at the market.
Their faith:
The Gond are animists, although the government says they are Hindu. They fear false gods and evil spirits living in everything and waiting to harm them. They live in constant fear. In one village several people had died from being sick. They could not do anything to heal the rest of the sick people, because they were not praying to the right God. They went to a Christian missionary and asked him to help. The missionaries and Christians in the village prayed, and many people got better. That taught them that Jesus was more powerful than their false gods. Since then many have followed Jesus. They are learning about Jesus. Many go to Christian Bible schools to learn more about Jesus and how to reach others with the Gospel.
Please pray:
Hannah prays that the Gonds will stop being cheated, and that the Gonds will know that Jesus loves them and will take care of them. She also prays that the Christian missionaries will safely reach Gond villages. Marissa prays that there will be more bibles in the Gondi language. Elisabeth prays that the non-Christian Gonds will stop living in fear of spirits. Emily prays that the Gonds will learn about Jesus. Elijah prays that God will please help the children have more Bibles.

I Timothy 2: 1, 3: I urge then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for everyone. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

I have never heard of the Gond religion, but, found it interesting to see how different people rely on their religion and perception of G-d to solve problems. It seems that these folks were easily swayed to believe in Jesus as they deserted their own beliefs. Makes me wonder about the power of their said faith….
