Bagasao Children’s Prayer Club: Fiji
Every week we learn about a different country or group of people needing prayer. We study their situation and then pray for them throughout the week.
Please join us in prayer for the country and people of Fiji.
The country and people:
Fiji is a group of 300 islands in the South Pacific, east of Australia. Only 112 of the islands are inhabited. The chief exports are sugar, gold, fish, and corpa (dried coconut which is used for extracting coconut oil). The main language is English.
The religion:
Christianity first came to the islands 150 years ago when Christian missionaries came. Christian Fijians thought the news about Jesus was so wonderful that they went to tell other people. Dr. Brown was a missionary in Fiji who wanted to bring the Word of God to Papua New Guinea. He went to the missionary school to see if there would be any volunteers to help him on his dangerous mission, traveling in deep-sea canoes to other islands. Everyone wanted to go. All 84 students said that if they lived, they lived, if they died, they died, but they were going to serve God.
Indians came to Fiji 100 years ago. They were brought from India as indentured servants for the British, and they brought Islam and Hinduism with them. When Fiji achieved independence in 1970, many Fijians grew afraid that Indians would take control of Fiji. Ever since there has been arguing and fighting between the Fijians and the Indians. Many terrible acts were committed, although Christian leaders spoke out against such behavior.
Please pray:
Hannah asks that you pray that the Indians will stop their Islamic and Hindu beliefs and learn about Jesus; she also wants you to thank God for all the Indians who do know Jesus. Marissa asks you to pray that there be peace between the Indians and Fijians. Elisabeth says to please pray that the non-Christian Fijians and the Indians learn about God and how good life as Christians can be. Emily prays that the Fijians and Indians live in peace and forgive each other. Elijah wants you to ask God to “please help the children have more Bibles. Amen.”

For more information see the links below:
- an interesting, although somewhat gruesome, read about Fiji cannibals who ate a missionary. Christianity brought an end to cannibalism in Fiji.

Thank you,
Hannah, Marissa, Elisabeth, Emily, and Elijah Bagasao
I Timothy 2: 1, 3: I urge then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for everyone. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
